I had been photographing Rainbow lorikeets in my garden for some time before I noticed in one of my photos that they had a kind of 'brush' at the end of their tongues. It turns out that this feature helps them to extract nectar and pollen, their main food, from deep inside flowers. The Rainbow lorikeet is called Trichoglossus (which means ‘hairy tongue’) haematodus, because of this feature. The flowers in the photo belong to a Red flowering gum (Corymbia ficifolia).
