Harlequin ducks tend to frequent the LeHardy Rapids on the Yellowstone River in Yellowstone National Park. I visited in the spring when the meltwater made the rapids particularly fierce. The ducks clung to a rock in the rapids, and I used a slow shutter speed to allow the water to go soft. I was amazed that I was able to capture all five ducks still for 1/8 second and with their heads showing, as often they seemed to be continually preening. I visited the site a dozen times to get this photo.
