  Horned grebes exhibit territorial behavior during nesting. Often couples whose nest has collapsed for one reason or another try to take the nest from another couple. The “nestless” pair chooses the moment when the partner from the other pair swims away and together attacks the hatching bird. They swim around the bird chained to the nest and look for a weak spot. The grebe on the nest has to make a lot of effort to repel the invaders.
