Weathering the storm

Weathering the storm

  • Where was the image taken?
    Hornoya, Norway
  • Story of the image

The arctic island of Hornoya is home to thousands of seabirds during the breeding season. When the birds return in March, snowstorms are a frequent occurence, and although photographing in such extreme conditions is challenging, it also provides a wonderful opportunity to make unique images that illustrate this often harsh environment. When this Shag landed in front of me during a particularly heavy snowstorm, I was awarded a wonderful opportunity to make this artistic portrait.

I live in the UK, but I am an avid explorer and get out in my campervan along roads less travelled, aiming to photograph the wildlife I encounter amidst some of Nature's most environmentally significant and diverse places. From photographing Puffins on a remote, snowy island hundreds of miles above the arctic circle, to photographing Dalmatian Pelicans in one of Europe's premier wetlands, I aim to capture unique and captivating images that inform and inspire.
