  This image was made as I stood on the deck of a small expedition ship that was navigating the west coast of Svalbard. We experienced the most amount of drift ice for over two decades, and the patterns that the ice formed were wonderful. I chose a slow shutter speed to capture the wing movement of the Fulmar as it flew past, and this also served to soften the icy environment behind the bird. The air temperature was around -20 Celsius, making it challenging to photograph in such conditions.
